Important and Helpful Changes For Members: Introducing Farmigo!

September 7th, 2012

We have some very exciting news for our Urban Acres members today!

Introducing Farmigo

Effective Monday, September 10th, we will begin using Farmigo to manage all of our members’ produce share accounts.  Farmigo is an amazing online tool built specifically to connect people like you with fresh food directly from companies like Urban Acres and local farms.  All members who are actively receiving produce will get an email next week with their Farmigo account information.

Here are a few of the benefits members will experience when using Farmigo:

1. Manage your online Urban Acres produce account profile.  You’ll have the ability to place your account temporarily on hold, change your pickup site or share, update your personal information, change your email address, and much more!  This means you don’t have to email us every time – yay!

2. Choose one of Farmigo’s convenient payment options.  You can pay for 1, 2, or 6 shares at a time.

COMING SOON!  Purchase more items from us through the Urban Acres webstore.

In short, the new system through Farmigo is going to be pretty awesome for everyone involved!

SO, NOW WHAT?

Just look for an email from us next week with your login info for the Farmigo website.  You will log into the Farmigo website and set up your payment plan for your produce.  All active members will need to set up new billing information on the Farmigo website, but it will only take a minute or two!

Hot Texas Outside = Produce Moves Inside

June 4th, 2012

The people spoke, and we listened!

To quote Keith Urban, “it’s gonna be a long, hot summer,”  and one of our biggest concerns from members over the past year has been picking up their produce in the heat and open air.  We’re going to be facing some high temps for awhile, and we want your produce to be as fresh as possible.   So, we’ve made important changes to make sure all of our co-op style produce farm stand locations have covered, air-conditioned facilities.

As a result, we’ve had to move a few of our farm stands – namely, White Rock and Addison.

White Rock farm stand moves to Dallas Eco-op in Lake Highlands

We’re excited to join forces with our friends at the Dallas Eco-op who have welcomed us to Lake Highlands!  The Dallas Eco-op is a group of North Texas organizations, such as the Texas Worm Ranch and Texas Honeybee Guild, whose work is driven by sustainability.

Starting Saturday, June 9th, all current White Rock members will start picking up their produce at the new Lake Highlands farm stand:

Dallas Eco-Op
10137 Shoreview Rd
Dallas, TX, 75238 (Map)
Pickup time: Every other Saturday, 8:30am-10:30am * Note new pickup time.

If you’d like to join and start getting produce at our new Lake Highlands location, please sign up here.  If you’re already a member and want to change to the Lake Highlands location, please email us at info@urbanacresmarket.com.  You can also feel free to change to ANY of our other farm stand locations.

Addison farm stand moves to Vitruvian Park

Vitruvian Park is a beautiful new community in Addison, and we’re so thankful that they’ve welcomed us with open arms!

Starting Saturday, June 16th, all current Addison members will start picking up their produce at the new Addison farm stand:

Vitruvian Park
3850 Vitruvian Way
Addison, TX 75001 (Map)
Pickup time: Every other Saturday, 9:00am-11:00am * Note new pickup time.  The pickup will be at the intersection of Vitruvian Way and Pointe.

If you’d like to join and start getting produce at our new Addison location, please sign up here.  if you’re already a member and want to change to the Addison location, please email us at info@urbanacresmarket.com.

Why Is My Corn Topless?

May 26th, 2012
We’re excited to include the first round of organic Texas sweet corn from Gundermann Acres in Wharton County, TX in the co-op style produce shares this weekend!  You’ll notice something different right away though – the corn will have the tops cut off.  Why?  Well, worms love sweet corn.  That’s why most non-organic corn is heavily sprayed with chemicals.  However, the corn you’ll be getting is organic, and our farmers do their best to slow the worms from getting to the corn, but they still eat the tops sometimes.  So the corn tops are chopped off.

Basically, it’s a telltale sign of organic corn to see the tops chopped off, because worms cannot survive on sprayed corn!

Squash Blossoms: Yes, They’re Edible!

May 25th, 2012

Squash blossoms

You might think we’re a little crazy including edible flowers in the co-op style produce shares this Saturday.  But yes, there will be local Texas squash blossoms from Gundermann Acres!  And they’re not only edible, but delicious.

From TheKitchn.com

Along with the arrival of summer squashes this season are their dainty, edible flowers. The bright orange blossoms sold at farmers’ and specialty markets are generally from zucchini plants, though the flowers of other summer squashes may be eaten, as well. The blossoms are often served fried – a dish we will never turn down, but there are several other ways to fully enjoy the beautiful color and delicate texture and flavor of this summer ingredient.

Please don’t waste these beauties!  Wow your family and friends with a tasty appetizer or side dish using your squash blossoms.  We’ve made it easy on you – just prepare them using one of these ideas below.  They’d be perfect with the Caprino Royale goat cheese from Waco that we sell in the store!
