This week, some of the UA team drove 833.5 miles for 51 hours and visited 9 farms all over Texas. Every single one of our farmers wanted to say THANK YOU to Urban Acres members for making this possible!
We’re taking farm trips right now because it’s planting time and we need to work with the farmers to get seeds in the ground for our spring and summer harvest. Once the harvest hits we try and stay out of their way.
Here are some photos…

This weekend’s co-op style produce shares will include exotic and colorful purple majesty potatoes – locally grown at Yellow Prairie Farm in Caldwell, TX. Thanks, farmer Dan Tucker! What to do with purple potatoes?
What are these sputnik-shaped veggies in your co-op style produce share? KOHLRABI! It’s local too, from our friends at Gundermann Acres in Wharton County, TX.
Kohlrabi is a member of the cruciferous (cabbage) family and tastes a lot like broccoli stems. The word kohlrabi is actually German for “cabbage turnip” – and that’s exactly what they look like.
How To Prepare Kohlrabi
The skin is slightly tough, so use a peeler or a sharp paring knife. Slice in matchsticks or ribbons for salad, or slice however you need to for one of the recipes below. You can also eat the stems, which taste very cabbage-like.
How To Eat Kohlrabi
You can definitely eat kohlrabi raw – peeled, sliced and added to a salad, or just eaten by itself sprinkled with sea salt. But kohlrabi is also wonderful cooked. Here are some great recipe ideas!
We’d love to know what you think of your kohlrabi…

Most often found in Asian grocery stores, the Daikon radish looks like a large, white carrot, though it has the flavor of a radish. It is used as a food herb in Asian herbal medicine. Both the tuber and the seeds are used medicinally.
Its uses are many, treating such problems as cough and asthma, low energy, and yeast infections. Daikon also treats many digestive issues, including nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, and heartburn.

Straight from the Texas valley, Texas Red Grapefruit are sweet, juicy and tree-ripened, literally stored on the tree to peak of perfection. The Rio Star grapefruit combines the two reddest varieties – Rio Red and Star Ruby grapefruit. It has an overall blush on the exterior peel with a deep red interior color which is 7 to 10 times redder than the Ruby Red.
