How cute is this? Here are some photos of little Sky Jisha, 3-years-old, daughter of our local farmer Kent Jisha at Texas Daily Harvest in Yantis, TX. She’s modeling the Jisha’s locally grown broccoli rabe and green leaf lettuce/red leaf lettuce that we’ll be including in this weekend’s co-op style produce shares. Let’s be honest though – all we want to know is, does Sky come with it?

833.5 Miles, 51 Hours, 9 Farms Visited…
This week, some of the UA team drove 833.5 miles for 51 hours and visited 9 farms all over Texas. Every single one of our farmers wanted to say THANK YOU to Urban Acres members for making this possible!
We’re taking farm trips right now because it’s planting time and we need to work with the farmers to get seeds in the ground for our spring and summer harvest. Once the harvest hits we try and stay out of their way.
Here are some photos…

Local Oranges, Kohlrabi, and the Best Apples You’ll Ever Taste
We have some extra special items in the co-op style produce shares this weekend…
For the first time, we have local Texas Hamlin Oranges. They’re from South Tex Organics in Mission, TX, which is also the home of the beautiful Rio Star grapefruit that we love in the winter months. Established in 1984, South Tex Organics was started with a desire to provide everyone with fresh, organic citrus and vegetables. Starting with 60 acres, South Tex Organics now harvests from more than 500 certified acres.
Calling all juicers: Hamlin oranges are perfect for juicing because they don’t have seeds!

Kohlrabi is back! It’s from our friends at Gundermann Acres in Wharton County, TX. We got a great response to this “sputnik-shaped” veggie last time it was in the shares a few weeks ago.
Some UA members chimed in on our Facebook page about how they prepared their kohlrabi last time…
>> Get more Kohlrabi recipes here.
UPDATE as of 1/18/13: the kohlrabi in the shares will actually be PURPLE this time. Fun!

Most often found in Asian grocery stores, the Daikon radish looks like a large, white carrot, though it has the flavor of a radish. It is used as a food herb in Asian herbal medicine. Both the tuber and the seeds are used medicinally.
Its uses are many, treating such problems as cough and asthma, low energy, and yeast infections. Daikon also treats many digestive issues, including nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, and heartburn.

Straight from the Texas valley, Texas Red Grapefruit are sweet, juicy and tree-ripened, literally stored on the tree to peak of perfection. The Rio Star grapefruit combines the two reddest varieties – Rio Red and Star Ruby grapefruit. It has an overall blush on the exterior peel with a deep red interior color which is 7 to 10 times redder than the Ruby Red.
